Mackinac Island

Mackinac (Mackinaw) Island is a small piece of land between the Southern and Northern Michigan peninsulas. No motor vehicles are allowed (bikes and horses only) but the island has a general aviation airport with a 3500 foot runway and a small marina where you can take the ferry to the mainland. Mackinac Island is also home to the one and only Grand Hotel featured in “Somewhere in Time” – the 1980 Hollywood classic.

See the video of landing and some photos of the famous landmarks including the hotel, the oldest grocery store, and the famous Mackinac fudge. The day we visited, the weather was absolutely picture-perfect but the gusty winds from the lake made for an interesting  (bouncy) approach.

I absolutely love Mackinac – every time I visit, I feel like I step back in time to a place with a slower, gentler pace. Highly recommended!
